Beacon Development Group and HumanGood Affordable Housing were joined by community members, elected officials, and the development team to celebrate the completion of work at Sun Tower in Yakima last week. The 12-story high rise was originally built in 1967 under Section 202 of the National Housing Act to serve low income and disabled seniors. HumanGood Affordable Housing undertook an extensive renovation to modernize the building to reduce utility costs and improve resident comfort.
The project serves seniors earning up to 30%, 40%, and 60% of area median income. There are 141 studio and one bedroom units, including 29 assisted living units. Amenities include a computer lab, salon, dining room, commercial kitchen, and community room. The total development cost was $21.4M and includes permanent funding from Enterprise Community Investments, the Washington State Housing Finance Commission, Washington State Housing Trust Fund, and a HUD Flexible Subsidy Loan. There are contracts with the Yakima Housing Authority and HUD to provide project based vouchers to all of the units. The project team included Environmental Works architects and Dawson Construction.
